showers fallen north bay about 9:00 p.m. tonight. i will break it down coming up. >> george: if you drive 583 altamont pass you will want to know how slow it is. it is our first hot spot of the morning. >> mark: the latest out of japan, desperate measures to prevent at meltdown at the power plant in japan. four reactors in danger of melting down. military is dumping thousands of gallons of sea water on to the reactors, in hopes of cooling the compact box. the flights have been suspended as radiation levels are very high. they failed to cool down the reactors. they are trying to finish and new power lines to record power to the cooling station the spirit the head of the regulatory

significant radiation coming from japan. i am outside of the air quality management, the same agency that tells us whether not there will be spare the air days. they are monitoring the radiation, going on on the seventh floor of this building. this is video of the devices they use, to measure the radiation levels, they take the air into the device. information gets transmitted to scientists in alabama who also look over the data and for now they say there's nothing of any significance that we should be worried about. they did not say there is no radiation, but it is so low right now we don't have to worry. the reason as we are separated by the ocean. even if particles made their way over here is so small it would not harm us. the worst-case scenario

>> mark: a famous big wave surfer surfing mavericks' monster waves. the half moon bay fireold sion milosky of hawaii was pulled from the water at around 7 p.m. on wednesday at mavericks, the waves reached 60 feet high. a friend says milosky apparently drowned after he was held underwater for two big waves. milosky is survived by a wife and two daughters on kauai. a section of highway one

very high at levels of radiation. plant operators are racing to finish a new power line that could restore power to the cooling systems possibly end the crisis. the head of the nuclear regulatory commission says all the water is gone from one of the fuel rod pools. that means they are heating up, sending radiation extremely high levels directly into the air. nothing can prevent them from heating and ultimately melting down. officials are denying that this fuel rod pools are hot dry. the japanese government says they have no plans to expand their evacuation. the u.s. state department says people living much further away from the plant are still in danger. to be safe the u.s. is sending planes in to help evacuate americans. japan has put in place a 20 mi. optional

evacuation order. there is being urged to stay indoors. this is new video of long lines at train stations in the middle east. risk from possible mate radiation remain greatest for the workers who are scrambling to tranquil those reactors. those who have been evacuated are considered to be in the safe area. the city 9 million people who live in the greater tokyo region, with the levels of radiation have rise slightly. >> reporter: there were high-level radiation have been detected, 19 mi. from the damaged nuclear plant. if you are exposed to that for about six hours are equal to the state allows that person should expose in the year. worries about

since they started monitoring this a couple of days ago. this is not just lip service, they're using high-tech instruments on the top floor of this building, here is video their we shot. this instrument has been around for years, it's never been tested quite like this. the take samples of the air, that sample pits and alabama where scientists there are also watching the numbers they said rain now even though things are gone a lot worse in japan the particles in the air moving at about their numbers are the same as they were just a few days ago which is pretty much nonexistent. the spokeswoman also told me that in a worst-case scenario, let's just say their reactors completely melt down and those particles reach the jet stream. check and make their way over to the west coast she said if the radiation from what she has been told
